What is Bowen Therapy and

how can it benefit you?

Leg Injury

Bowen Therapy was developed in Australia by Tom Bowen in the mid 50's to early 80's. It is a unique form of neuromuscular re-patterning that works primarily through the nervous system on structural and energetic levels. Also known as Fascia Release Technique, it is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that has its foundation in osteopathic, chiropractic and acupoint theory.

The technique is a gentle, soft-tissue form of bodywork that is performed by rolling "moves" over muscles, tendons and ligaments and can usually be performed through loose clothing.

It is these "moves" that stimulate the body's innate intelligence to heal itself. The practitioner develops an instinctive feeling for the tensions within the muscles and fascia.

The "moves" send messages along the proprioceptive nerve pathways to the brain. These powerful stimulations reset and balance the autonomic nervous system. This typically leads to an improvement of function within the body's systems and organs.

"Structure governs function" is one of the main principles of the Bowen technique:

A disruption of the structure of body tissue through injury, overuse or misalignment can eventually lead to a disturbance in function. This manifests itself in pain and various types of conditions in the body. Even emotional issues or trauma can be perceived by the body as injury eventually causing physical ailments or imbalances.

By addressing the body structures, Bowen Therapy can restore the body's functions and relieve pain.

Bowen "moves" are done on specific parts of the body but the effects extend through the entire body. For example a treatment for lower back pain might improve circulation in the hands and feet.

Treatments last anywhere from 40 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the issue being addressed and the age of the patient.

Frequent pauses between sets of "moves" allow the nervous system to integrate the signals that are being generated. This results in a deep sense of relaxation, releasing dysfunctional tensions and patterns in the nerves and muscles, stimulating the body's own ability to heal.

At this point the client has shifted into the Parasympathetic State (rest and relax) and autonomic nervous system is reset and balanced. It is only in this parasympathetic state that the body is able to heal.

Relief is often felt after one session. In many cases only 2 to 5 treatments are necessary for long lasting and often permanent relief. If re-injury occurs a maintenance treatment may be implemented.

The soothing and restorative effects of a Bowen treatment have a wide range of applications and are safe for children, the elderly and women during all stages of pregnancy.

Through practical experience Bowen practitioners have been increasingly expanding the range of conditions that the technique has been found to effectively manage.
